Most people misunderstand the purpose of taxes. They think taxes are about social programs, roads, the military or similar things. Yet that's not true at all. Taxes are not necessary by any means.
The government has the power (and does) print all of the money it wants. Taxes at the federal level is not about the government collecting money. It's about keeping people from getting two powerful, and redistributing the power from people who are capable to people who are less capable. There is NOTHING good about taxes, and any tax, at the federal level of government certainly, is a bad tax.
I'm not sure that the United states needs to spend more than the gross national products of all but the top 4 countries in the world on "defense" alone! In non-wartime, does the United states really need a standing army numbering over a million soldiers?
The federal government should have nothing to do with education. that belongs at the local level, close to the people who are being educated.
Medical insurance should certainly not be run by the government.
Welfare and other programs that reward people to not work and not produce should be dismantled.
Social security would be much better handled as a privately run investment program, much line many 401Ks and other retirement plans operate.
I could go on and on. Many of the "services" that the federal government provides are grossly mismanaged, should be run at a lower level (local or state) or are simply not needed at all.
Any service that rewards people to not produce should be immediately canceled.
Taxes are a control mechanism designed to get people to be dependant upon the government. Taxes serve to reduce the desire to work and create masses of non-productive and more-or-less worthless people.
